We go to different towns across the country for many reasons, but in general, if you are a tourist, it is very likely that you would want to be in a city or a town that has a character. But what exactly is a character for a city? How is it defined? How does it distinguish a special town from the rest of human settlements located all over the country?

There are many ways, but if you are a foodie like I am, then you would want to be in a town or a city that has a rich set of food stores and restaurants that can excite your palate. If you're really intent on visiting (or at least knowing) the best cities out there for their food culture, then this post is for you. The list is based on this article reported on Yahoo!

For the list, the criteria ensured that the towns perfect for foodies don't have a population greater than 250,000, a healthy farmers' market, good restaurants, a media outfit dedicated to food, and in general, a population that is very much concerned about what it feeds to itself. For a foodie tourist, this is important if you want to be in a town that will satisfy your foodie cravings. As long as there are quality restaurants in town, you'll never starve to death!

Topping the list is Boulder, Colorado. It is often cited to be one of the healthiest, most educated, and most environment-friendly towns in America. Now it is given more character by getting the Best Foodie Town Award. I would personally like to visit the town someday, just so I could check out what is so good about this town that it gets all those nice lifestyle awards.

Following it were McMinnville, Oregon; Big Sur, California; Traverse City, Michigan; Louisville, Kentucky; and Ithaca, New York. You see, a town doesn't really have to be a big city just to have that character. Sometimes what you only need is a very good farmers' market.
