Travel and Vacation ArticlesTraveling Around Dangerous Areas
One piece of very hot news right now is regarding these two American hikers who got convicted in Iran for illegally entering the country and for acting as spies for the US government. The two hikers were supposedly hiking around the relatively peaceful Kurdish region north of Iraq and close to the border with Iran. Unlike other areas in Iraq that remain violent, this semiautonomous region is frequently visited by adventurous tourists for the scenic views.
According to the Americans, crossing into the Iran-Iraq border was accidental only, when they stepped off a dirt road while hiking nearby a waterfall. Of course, Iran police officers did not take this excuse and arrested them in July 2009. They were convicted to stay in jail for a total of 8 years. You can check out the full details of this report through the Huffington Post link below. So what is this post basically driving at? You see, US and Iran do not exactly have the friendliest of relations. In fact, they do not have any formal diplomatic relationships at all, with the US naming Iran as one of the members of the "Axis of Evil." So whenever one gets the chance to implicate the other--and Iran is arguably willing to go to any length just to annoy the US--they will do it, and this one is a perfect excuse for Iran to get the ire of the US again. Knowing this piece of information, it is only prudent for any traveler to become very careful when trodding borders with this country. Some people may even advise that you should not even go anywhere near the area at all. It's just common sense when traveling not to go near places where you may be set up for some serious trouble. Now the US is in a lose-lose situation. If it does anything under-the-table to free the Americans, they get a bad rep (as if it is not bad enough) for supposedly interfering with another country's justice system. If it does not, it gets a bad rep among the Americans. Lose-lose, indeed. Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/20/us-hikers-iran-sentenced_n_932090.html You can talk about...
