Harlem is one of New York City's most visited neighborhoods among tourists on a global scale. Its interesting role in the formation of life and culture in the Big Apple made it a very interesting point of attraction among these tourists. In fact, Harlem is the most popular neighborhood in NYC today, save for Greenwhich Village. Thus, the scheduled opening of the first major hotel in the neighborhood since Hotel Theresa closed down in 1967 is a welcome news.
The hotel, named the Aloft, is one of the hundreds of hotels that were scheduled to open in the city since 2007. It is hoped that by the establishment of the major hotel in the neighborhood, tourists will be encouraged to stay longer in Harlem, which is already established as a must-see neighborhood in NYC in the first place. It's interesting that it took about 40 years before another major hotel opened in this iconic neighborhood. The last time there was a major hotel in Harlem, Hotel Theresa, blacks were not as accepted in other hotels as they are today. It served as a haven for many African-American icons, further fueling Harlem's status as a vital point in black culture in America. Among the Theresa's visitors were Fidel Castro, Muhammad Ali, and Malcolm X, among others. However, as time passed by and African-Americans were started to get accepted in other hotels in the city, the Theresa's luster started to wane. Add to that the increasingly high crime rates in Harlem at the time, and soon, in 1967, the iconic hotel shut down. But with the revitalization of the city, which saw numerous restaurants and other interesting attractions starting to sprout all over Harlem, the addition of this 124-room, 12-storey hotel in the area will be most welcome.
